Wedding Gowns Galore!

Royal Affairs Ballroom walk through our doors and into a space of luxury.

One of the biggest decisions you will face as the big day approaches is choosing the perfect wedding gown.

A couple’s wedding day is one of the most special days in their life. Together they will have a lot to plan for such as choosing a wedding venue, wedding date, invitations, flowers, the catering and other vendor services. But it’s the bride’s beautiful wedding dress that is the focal point for the entire event. There are a few things more important to every bride than her wedding dress. And today, there are so many choices for dresses and gowns with classic glamour that is contour inspired, alluring and beautiful. Here are a few ideas we thought might interest you while you are researching and choosing your wedding dress or gown.

You may be reading this because you have decided to tie the knot and maybe you’re researching wedding gowns. So, now that you have decided to take the plunge, don’t let the stereotypes fool you. Your wedding will be a day you’ll remember the rest of your life. Can you picture yourself in diagonally draped silk and satin with unique embellishments of pearl and crystal over lace? And now, not only in white, but also available in chic colors. And, you can now have all the shine, bling and sparkle you want on your big day. Stunningly beautiful, your wedding gown can be cinched at the waist, have rouching at the bodice or crissed crossed draping, the variety of designs and mixtures of fabrics are all available to you.

One of the biggest decisions you will face as the big day approaches is choosing the perfect wedding gown. The process of shopping for a wedding dress can be a fabulous adventure, but it can also be stressful and overwhelming, particularly because a bride-to-be often starts shopping for her gown before many other details are determined. You might have had a clear mental picture of the perfect wedding dress ever since you were five years old. On the other hand, you may have no idea what you are going to wear or feel strange about the idea of wearing other colors except white. With all the choices to make, the important thing is to relax, and remember that there are as many different kinds of dresses out there as there are different kinds of brides. With the variety of designer brands out there, which should you pick? What’s the difference?

You may not have realized there are several types of dresses you can choose from for your wedding day. Once you choose your gown or dress it doesn’t end there because—every gown and dress designer has a long list of different styles, fabrics and colors to choose from. If you make your way online or to any mall in the world, you’re sure to find hundreds of different wedding gowns, or wedding dresses. When shopping for the brides dress, two different types may be mentioned. One is wedding gown and the other is a wedding dress. The biggest difference between the two is the wedding gown tends to be a bit more expensive than the wedding dress. They will have more lace and pearls on the gown, with a variety of interwoven fabrics and embellishments. Wedding gowns are more commonly worn at more traditional or formal type of weddings. While you wouldn’t wear a formal wedding gown to a judge’s chambers, or the justice of peace, you could wear a wedding dress to both.

Tips For Buying
•Seasonal
One consideration is the location and the time of the year of the wedding. If the wedding is going to be an outside wedding, then couples  may find it less expensive to have wedding and reception in the summer season. If the bride will have an outdoor wedding the she should think about a light and flowing wedding dress, without the train. Keep your eyes open for sample sales, and discounts from past seasons’ gowns.

•Buying or renting?
Consider researching for a slightly used gown. Or, have you thought of “borrowing” your mom’s dress? Buying a dress can be more expensive but it can also make the dress more easily personalized and customized. Many women may skip the more expensive salons entirely. Rental services abound. However, when the wedding dress is rented, the dress might not be able to be altered as much. It is best to ask the manufacture or store selling the dress if alterations can be made to the rented dress.  When making your plans to buy a wedding gown or dress for your wedding and reception, choosing a designer brand may be your best option to ensure the best mixture of quality fabrics, style, durability, and most of all comfort. Remember to read the contract and have a good understanding about sizes, fittings, color and fabrics.

•Buying from international
When looking to buy a dress for an international manufacture, the bride-to-be maybe able to get a great deal. The problem with buying a dress online is that the dress can’t be tried on for fit, and a guarantee of return may not be possible. Another problem that a bride-to-be can run in to is when she sees a picture of the dress online and instantly falls in love with it, but when it arrives it isn’t the same the dress at all. Beware of the “bait and switch” practice. It is more common among manufactures that ship overseas and know that it will be more difficult for the buyer to return the dress.

•Buying on The Cheap
Buying a wedding dress on the cheap can easily be done. Many consignment stores and 2nd hand stores will sell wedding dresses. Most will be in good condition but they may need to be professionally cleaned.  There are many different 2nd shops that won’t allow returns. Another way to buy a wedding dress for less is to ask friends and family if the bride-to-be can wear theirs. Some women will rent out or let the bride-to-be borrow their dress if they’re on a tight budget. There are caveats to buying on the cheap. For instance consider buying a pre-owned wedding dress. One practical idea of buying a used wedding dress is that you can skip the salons, and find a good seamstress to make the alterations for a fraction of the price and save a significant amount of money.   While this is a pro, there is a down side that you should consider. First and foremost it is used garment–and it’s already been worn by another bride.  What would you do with unexpected rips or stains somewhere on the dress? It is always nice to have a dress that is in perfect condition. Finally, remember to take into account the added costs of alterations and accessories, jewelry and shoes.

Always Plan Ahead To Avoid Costly Mistakes
Allow plenty of time to peruse magazines, pictures, visit the bridal shops (and nearly all wedding styles are now online). Do your research before jumping to a decision. Look at as many styles as you possibly can. Discuss it with your fiancé and your family. Ask friends and family members who recently married how they chose, and what steps did they, take and why. And finally, when you decide to go for it, carefully research the bridal’s policies before deciding which one to buy.

Shop Early! Not that you need any coaxing, but you should start dress shopping around 8 to 10 months before the wedding. It can take up to two months to find the right gown and then four months for the dress to be custom made to fit your body perfectly. The first fitting usually happens six to eight weeks prior to “I do.” Give yourself plenty of time and keep in mind that the sooner you start shopping, the less likely you’ll feel rushed and make a quick decision that you may
regret later.

Summary
When it comes to choosing a wedding gown or dress, you obviously want to make sure that it reflects your personal style, but picking the perfect gown or dress goes far beyond aesthetic appeal. And, remember to start shopping early. The sooner the bride starts looking for her wedding dress, the better chances she will find her dream dress.

There are few moments in a woman’s life, as important and memorable as her wedding day. It’s a known fact that almost every bride feels nervous the day of their wedding. It is a common thing that every bride feels–and those emotions are all a part of your right of passage. Revel in those feelings and relax. You can ease that tension though by choosing a great dress or gown that is just right for you–one that you will not only feel comfortable wearing all day and evening, but with the style and grace that mirrors and reflects your beauty and bespeaks your confidence and future expectations. Can a wedding dress or gown actually do all that? The answer is yes, and much more! The right dress or gown you choose will help make your wedding an affair to remember.

Finally, and most importantly, enjoy your special day. Take a deep breath and just take it all in, your groom, your wedding day, your friends, your family. It’s a moment you’ll definitely want to remember. Enjoy the planning process, and stay engaged with every facet of it because it really does fly by. Wedding and Reception Duties for the Best Man

the Best Man is to be the groom's ranking gentleman.

The Best Man as the quarterback of the Groom’s team with almost as many duties as the Maid of Honor.

A Best Man’s Wedding AND RECEPTION Duties

For the wedding and wedding receptions in the Dallas-Ft Worth area it’s the Best Man who becomes the key note speaker. The Best Man can add a blending of flamboyant manner and reckless courage because he alone holds a position of honor and has a “unique” and qualified relationship with the Groom.

If you’re asked to be a Best Man-congratulations-you have the high honor and an important opportunity to make the Bride and the Groom sparkle, and add to the rejoicing of the special occasion!

As a tradition, a successful and memorable or humorous speech by the Best Man can lend to the atmosphere at many weddings and wedding venues, or dull the occasion. You’re wise to pull up a chair, take a seat and take some notes before the main event happens. But, we are getting ahead of ourselves, as the speech is really the culmination of the other Best Man duties. There are other important responsibilities that precede the speech. Here we offer a spattering of what may be the most important suggestions for your consideration.

Brides aren’t the only ones who need a confidante and someone to settle nerves before and during the marriage and wedding receptions in  the Dallas-Ft Worth area. Think of the Best Man as the quarterback of the Groom’s team with almost as many duties as the Maid of Honor.

Best Man Duties
In addition to keeping the groom grounded, the Best Men may be expected to:
•  Go with the groom and the other groomsmen to pick out the formal wear for the wedding and wedding venues in the Dallas-Ft Worth area.
•  Plan the bachelor parties along with the groomsmen–most Best Men find this the best part of the job!
• Attend the rehearsal dinners–this is the chance to meet any relatives that may come from out of town so they don’t wonder who is who at the wedding and wedding reception.
• At the wedding, the Best Man obviously stands beside the groom, but the most essential part is to have the Bride’s ring ready when the time comes without fumbling through pockets.
• It is common for the Best Man and the Maid of Honor to sign the wedding license as witnesses after the ceremony.
• Quarterback the other groomsmen to ensure they are ready for any pictures before and after the ceremony.
• Pay the person who performed the ceremony their fee – usually with a sealed envelope.
• The money is the groom’s responsibility, but the Best Man looks after making sure the envelope is received and then it is on to the reception.

Then comes the big event at the wedding reception, and moment you have been waiting and preparing for (just as everyone else in the wedding); the first toast and a speech to the Bride and Groom.  It is highly advisable that the Best Man be well prepared for this, and it is better to read the speech or toast than to stumble through off-the-cuff remarks.   Nor is this the time for off-color remarks as that is what the bachelor party is for.  A short eloquent presentation is better than an long unprepared meaningless ramble.  Unless the Best Man is a member of Toastmasters International, preparation is the key.

Other Smaller Considerations
Traditionally, the Best Man will dance with both the honor attendant and the Bride during the first dance at wedding receptions or wedding venues in DFW area.
– The Best Man should make sure that a family member or someone from the wedding party is taking care of the gifts and envelopes and that they are secure.
– Depending on the couple’s mode of transportation after the reception, the Best Man can also take charge of decorating the “getaway car”.
-Be prepared and help coordinate last minute transportation for guests or other “unplanned” activities either after the wedding, or post wedding reception.

Best Man Summary
Above everything else, your duties as the Best Man is to be the groom’s ranking gentleman, whose gracious (and sober) demeanor helps to announce the new couples’ official  togetherness.  Enjoy the opportunity and enjoy the celebrations. With all the duties of a Best Man, the wedding and wedding reception will be over quickly, so the Best Man (like the other wedding attendants) should take the time to plan early and strategize how you will add your part to a relaxing, joyous and fun-filled occasion. Your groom and his Bride (and wedding guests) will appreciate your effort!

Hiring a Wedding Consultant

A good planner is a specialist who is creative, clever, and connected.

A good planner is a specialist who is creative, clever, and connected.

Hiring a Wedding Consultant: Good Move or Bad

In the article, “Wedding Planners? I’ve Seen Them in Movies…,” you read about wedding consultants and what they can do to help you. A competent coordinator can be a huge boon for the happy couple, but a planner can also be a huge drain on their wallets. So should you hire a wedding planner or not? The answer is an enthusiastic maybe! Hiring a wedding planner depends on many factors, which the couple and perhaps their families need to weigh carefully.

One of the primary benefits of a wedding consultant is the stress that is taken off the bride on the actual wedding day, so she can relax a little and enjoy her big day, knowing that all the details are being handled. A wedding consultant is great when you need assistance with planning, running errands and making calls for your wedding.  Think of the time a couple could save when planning a wedding which can be an overwhelming and psychologically exhausting job. Wouldn’t it be nice to have help, especially when you and your fiancé are busy with your jobs and have frantic schedules already?

A talented wedding consultant will bring their experience and connections for your use and hopefully make the whole process run smoothly and at a lower cost.  Wedding consultants in Dallas are on top of the local situation and know what vendors to use and what venues work best.

However, you must ask yourself first if there is room in that all-important budget for the cost of a consultant. Even though coordinators should be able to help you trim costs, there is no guarantee that the savings will match the price. Second, ask yourself if you already have a good support system in place, with plenty of family and friends ready, willing, and eager to help. For brides good at organizing and designating assignments, planning the wedding can provide a time for bonding with future in-laws and having friends and members of both families getting to know each other.

Everyone is different and some brides feel that a wedding consultant is completely out of the question as they are not comfortable with someone they don’t really know taking control of their wedding day.  Others are concerned with hiring a wedding consultant and finding out that they are totally incompatible.  Or maybe the consultant is too pushy or difficult to deal with, and doesn’t take your needs and wants into consideration., who tries to take total control of the wedding plans, who is just plain unscrupulous and waiting to take advantage of you, or who just plain doesn’t do your job.

But don’t be overly concerned, just like any other vendor you work with, you will do a thorough interview with a potential wedding consultant and ask for and check out their references and past clients.  Ask your fiancé and your family for their input.   Your strategy should be to take your time and don’t let anyone pressure you to make a decision until you have had time to process the facts and your thoughts.

Do your research. Take a lot of time to think about it before jumping to a decision. Discuss it with your fiancé and your family. Ask friends and family members who recently married what they did and why. And finally, if you decide to go for it, carefully research and interview potential candidates before deciding which one to hire. Remember to also check with family and friends who have been married in the last little while and find out what they did for their weddings.  Or, if you were recently at a wedding that impressed you, contact the bride and asked her if she had a wedding consultant and if so ask for their name and number.

In summary, consider the benefits of hiring a coordinator to help with planning, making phone calls, running errands, and doing much of the work. Sounds great, huh? A planner can cut down on the amount of time a couple spends planning the wedding, and the task is, without a doubt, a monumental, time-consuming, and emotionally-draining mission. It’s nice to have all the help you can get. This is especially important if you and your fiancé are both work at stressful jobs, juggle odd schedules, or have hectic lifestyles already. The consultant would bring knowledge and numerous contacts to the table, which should help you to save money and complete the plans more easily.  (Coordinators in Dallas, for example, will have up-to-date news about Dallas wedding venues and vendors.) And without a doubt, the wedding coordinator helps to relieve stress on the day of the wedding, which allows the bride especially to have a more enjoyable day.

If you decide that a wedding consultant is the right thing for you and your wedding, you can trust your own good judgment because you have weighed all the facts and come to a decision that works for you.

I Am The Maid of Honor – Now What?

A Maid of Honor is a bride’s best friend.

As the Maid of Honor, or Matron of Honor, you have one of the most important roles in making sure the wedding is a success.

I Am The Maid of Honor – Now What?
The bride has given you a great “honor” on her wedding day, but you are not “maid” of money!!

Weddings can be expensive (even the most modest ones), so be sure you have a frank discussion with the bride on what she expects from you financially to avoid surprises or disappointments later on.

I’ve found that most of my friends have been very generous with their wedding parties.  With some of us having been through pay cuts or being unemployed, it’s so great that they care enough to foot some of the bill! Largely, we are all familiar with the traditional wedding responsibilities of the Maid of Honor (MOH).  For research, there are many great sites on the internet that provide helpful lists and tips. My favorite is a timeline checklist that covers every base from the moment the brides asks you to be her maid of honor until the happy couple leaves for the honeymoon.

A Wedding Planner is the Maid of Honor’s greatest ally.  If the bride has a Wedding Planner, be sure to get a copy of the Planner’s itinerary, so you can keep track of times and sequence of events leading up to and including the big day.  Also, ask the Planner to copy you on all wedding emails and texts so you can support her/him.

For a successful wedding, your Maid of Honor package will need to include vast patience, organizational, team building and advisory skills and lots of energy. Make sure you have all the bridesmaids’ contact information (cell numbers and email addresses) on your phone, so you can send updates and reminders quickly and easily to the group or track someone down if they are (heaven forbid) late for the rehearsal or even the wedding.

Major Duties
•  Dress shopping – go with the bride to look for her dress and the bridesmaids’ dresses.
•  Plan the shower – and the Bachelorette party.
•  Spread the word – let folks know where the bride and groom are registered and field questions from wedding guests.
•  Keep a record of gifts – the MOH should jot down what presents the bride receiver at her show and who gave them to her.
•  Co-ordinate the bridesmaid duties – as “chief” bridesmaid, the MOH should schedule bridesmaids’ dress fittings.
•  Be the bride’s right-hand – carry out other tasks assigned by the bride.
•  Say a few words – prepare a toast to be given at the rehearsal or wedding dinner.  Here is a great place for tips to help you ace your speech.

Small But Important Details
• Make sure you have the groom’s ring on the wedding day.  It is suggested that you place it on your thumb, so that you are not fumbling for it during the ceremony.
• Fluff the bride’s dress and veil and check her hair and makeup just before she walks down the aisle.

From good to great Maid of Honor
Here is what the bride will REALLY need …  If you can pull this off, you will be the Ultimate Maid of Honor …
• Lend an ear and nod enthusiastically when the bride philosophizes about the wedding cake.
• Even if the bride seems to dwell on the same subjects repeatedly, the MOH is expected to keep listening and smiling.
• Troubleshoot emotional crises.  In most cases, this means lots of tissues, hugging, and hand-holding.
• Keep the bride laughing. For the stressed-out bride, laughter can be a great relief and is a welcome alternative to venting.
• Make sure the bride takes a moment to eat something THE FUN STUFF

We just threw a bachelorette party (See ideas for Bachelorette Party elsewhere in this blog.) here in Dallas last weekend and had a great time making it fun for the bride without breaking the bank. It can be simple to do this on a budget.  It doesn’t have to be crazy for the bride to have a memorable time.  With all the pre-wedding activities going on, having a chance to be with the bridal party and girlfriends allows the bride to relax and enjoy.   Everyone wore tiaras and boas; we served a fun punch, had pot-luck, watched chick flicks and ate popcorn.  The bride shared about how the couple met, how long they dated and how the groom proposed. The girlfriends asked about their first date, how long it took him to kiss her, and what brought them together.

We ended with everyone giving the bride their best relationship advice!  Of course, it ended with everyone falling down with laughter. Bottom line is have fun, enjoy the planning process, and stay engaged with every facet of it because it really does fly by.

Wedding Planners? I’ve Seen Them in Movies…

When you look at a list of the first five things that a bride needs to do, you often see the task “hire a wedding consultant” high on the list. If you look closely, however, you often notice that this is marked as an option.  Many brides-to-be are left wondering, then, if hiring a wedding consultant is really necessary. First, you need to know what a wedding consultant is and what one does.

Basically, a coordinator is a wedding expert, trained to plan or assist in the planning of the client’s wedding. A good planner is a specialist who is creative, clever, and connected. She should have a wealth of knowledge about everything and all things wedding-related. So, a wedding coordinator in the Dallas, Texas, area should be able to quickly provide the couple with a long list of potential vendors for their nuptials, including wedding venues in Dallas, bridal boutiques in the region, DJ’s and photographers who work in the area, the best caterers in Texas, and more. She should advise the bride-to-be and her fiancé on timelines, budgets, etiquette, guest list difficulties, cake bakers, and all the relevant details. The planner should assist the couple by doing a lot of the phone calls and leg work, and she should also know little tips and tricks to help them get more for their money.  A consultant should also be able to solve the little glitches during the planning and on the day of the wedding.

He is also a liaison or contact person for the bride and groom. The consultant should be able to get discounts from area vendors because of connections and volume of business. The planner should know about unusual or little-known products or services that would be ideal for the happy couple. He should act as a manager to ensure that all the plans stay on track and within budget, and on the day of the wedding itself, the planner should synchronize everything and everyone because he knows who should be where when.

Wedding consultants offer a variety of service packages that will fit various budgets. A bride-to-be and her fiancé can hire a coordinator to assist with the entire planning process and wedding day itself. Others might work with a consultant for just one or two lengthy planning session. An option that is becoming extremely popular is the hiring of a Day Of Coordinator (DOC), who is hired to simply become familiar with the couple’s wedding plans and assist in any way possible on the day of the wedding.

Whether to hire a wedding planner still ends up being a weighty decision for the couple. You must consider whether the advantages are going to outweigh the disadvantages, and you will want to be sure before you and your fiancé sign the consultant’s contract. Check for the related article “Hiring a Wedding Consultant: Good Move or Bad” for a discussion about some of the
pro’s and con’s.

Ideas For Bachelorette Parties

Planning a bachelorette party and not sure where to start?

Planning a bachelorette party and not sure where to start?

Ideas For Bachelorette Parties at wedding venues in Dallas

Bachelorette parties are a time for the bride-to-be to have one last hurrah with her girlfriends. When planning a bachelorette party, remember that all brides are different and what one person thinks is a great time might not be someone else’s cup of tea. Bachelorette parties don’t have to be all about night clubs, tequila shots, and embarrassing hats – make sure the bride-to-be will comfortable and that it’s something she’ll enjoy.

Planning a bachelorette party and not sure where to start? The best way to get started is to choose a bachelorette party theme that will create a unique and memorable celebration for the bride-to-be and her friends. With so many different types of bachelorette party themes, it will be easy to find the right one in Dallas to fit the personality of the bride-to-be.

Suggestion For Bachelorette Parties Themes
Spa Theme: For the bride who loves to over-indulge and relax, a spa themed bachelorette party is perfect. Make sure you book treatments in advance for everyone in the party at a local spa. Treatments like manicures, pedicures, massages, and facials are exactly what will make this party relaxing for the bride-to-be and her guests. Coordinate with the spa in advance of the party to see what you’re allowed to bring to the spa. Champagne, strawberries, and cheese and crackers are all foods that work well for a spa bachelorette party.

Karaoke Theme: A karaoke themed bachelorette party is a recipe for hilarity! It is also easier to plan and much more casual than some of the other themes. Invite everyone for a fun-filled night of bad singing with great friends. Even though it is a casual party, the bride-to-be will undoubtedly have a night to remember. Make the night more special for her by showering her with crazy bachelorette party favors and treating her like a rock star!

Cooking Themed Party: If the bride-to-be loves to eat but needs some practice in the kitchen then this theme is a fun way to eat, drink, and learn how to cook. A Dallas venue that can pull this off is Central Market. They provide cooking lessons and demonstrations. This will give everyone an opportunity to learn how to make a delicious new meal and you’ll be able to taste the dishes after the lesson. It is a relaxed yet fun way to celebrate a bachelorette party with friends.

Do a little research for Wedding Venues in Dallas and you’ll come up with a complete list of Bachelorette Party Planning Service and they provide a VIP party host to escort your ladies group into different Dallas wedding venues throughout the night. Event planners will carefully customize your party for any theme or location(s). See the article in this blog about wedding planners.

This schedule will keep you on track. Here are a few bachelorette party tips to keep in mind as you plan a bachelorette party in Dallas for someone special to you:

3+ Months BeforeEstablish the theme. Review your options together. If she does want to walk on the wild side, get her to define exactly what that means.
Set the date – try for a weekend night one to two weeks before the wedding. (If members of the bridal party are from all over and can only convene a few days before, that timing works, too.) Create the guest list.

2 Months BeforeSend out a casual “save the date” email to see if there are calendar conflicts with invitees.
Brainstorm possible game plans and party stunts with the bridesmaids (make it a surprise for the bride).
No matter what the format, alcohol and bachelorette revelry usually go hand in hand. So please be responsible and start thinking about transportation arrangements — many groups book a chauffeured limo or party bus for the evening.

1 Month BeforeSend invitations. Try EVite service – it is a free email invitation service. Make sure your invitation politely informs guests that a contribution to the festivities will be expected and name the price. Don’t forget to include the costs needed to cover the bride-to-be—she shouldn’t have to pay for anything on her big night. Make all necessary reservations and ask about drink specials and bachelorette freebies. Make your transportation reservation(s).
Order T shirts based on your theme. Customink has numerous ideas for bachelorette themes.

1 Week BeforeBuy bachelorette party accessories – novelty veil, tiara, bite-me candy necklaces and other naughty props. Make a list of the games you want to play, with rules and how-tos, in case you forget after too many margaritas. Keep it handy. Confirm attendance and transportation arrangements.

1 Day BeforeDebrief the bride – it’s okay to keep some of the details a surprise.
Remind guests of the meeting place and time, reiterating the address. If there are several stops planned, name the second address, too, for latecomers.
Re-confirm all reservations and get plenty of sleep.

Take a deep breath and and let the party begin! It’s a moment she’ll defintely remember for all time. Enjoy the planning process, and stay engaged with every facet of it because it really does fly by. Finally, and most importantly, enjoy your special day.

Maid of Honor from A Sister’s Perspective

A Maid of Honor is a bride's best friend.

We help our clients produce life events one memory at a time.

MOH From a Sister’s Perspective

Weddings are hard work, and it falls to the maid of honor to help handle some very critical and important details. As the Maid of Honor, or Matron of Honor, you have one of the most important roles in making sure the wedding is a success. You are the go to person for the bride when it comes to guidance, a fresh perspective and just coping with everything–especially last minute details. A Maid of Honor is a bride’s best friend. Being chosen as an honor attendant can be a chore, but it is also a tremendous compliment and a lot of fun! If you are on the lookout for new information you can use for your own wedding, participating in a friend’s wedding arrangements can be a big eye opener!

I’ll always remember my sister bursting into the room exclaiming, “We’re engaged!” Those were the exact words that had fallen from my her lips as she excitedly shared the good news to me and our family. The whole while she wore the biggest smile we had ever seen. Three months later, the wedding date was set and I was chosen to be her Maid of Honor. Besides feeling very honored and ecstatic that I was chosen, I was also nervous! I had never been chosen to be a “Maid of Honor” for any of my friends but it wasn’t too long before I knew what my duties would be. Becoming her Maid of Honor (MOH) meant that I would now become even more close to my sister. I would be her right-hand woman and someone who would not only help with wedding details but also the one person she could always depend upon and lean on when just coping became tough. I suddenly found myself deeply committed at every level, and began thinking about the goals and objectives that lay ahead for her (and me).

My sister picked out 3 ladies from a list of her best friends to be her bridesmaids and each one was very supportive and helped to make her big day become a reality. They were helpful with suggesting different resources such as suggesting different wedding venues. Other events too, such as helping me plan her Bachelorette party, and helping us set up at the venue the day of the wedding! I helped my sister compose a list of guests to invite to the wedding, discussed wedding themes and which wedding colors would look best, and options for each table set up. We had a basic idea of what the center pieces would look like on each table, but once we got all the pieces together she and I felt as if something was missing. That’s when my mother came in to lend a hand with her creativity. She is renowned for her craftsmanship, she’s a lady who knows how to mix and match and blend materials together for a marvelous effect. She created the most elaborate centerpieces using an assortment of vases and attaching Rhinestone, ribbons and beads, and blended a beautifully decorated focal point. She used small submergible lights, and delicate orchids in the vases that matched the wedding colors, and helped create a warm and soft glow to the whole ambiance. As soon as she unveiled her masterpieces, I could tell my sister’s heart was stolen, again!

Being a Maid of Honor is a lot of work, from helping to plan the little details to the big tasks such as the Wedding Cake and Photographer. It was an experience I’ll always remember. Here are a few more ideas I want to offer for any new MOH’s who may need a jump start on what you need to do and where to begin.

As a MOH you must help in going with the bride to look at different locations for the wedding and researching wedding venues. Aside from choosing what day and time to have the wedding, many times the Bride needs help in choosing a venue to hold the ceremony and party together, and having your suggestions and wedding venue ideas ready ahead of time will help her begin getting her thought process focused. We started using Google or Yahoo, try to use certain keywords to narrow your search as local as possible such as, “wedding, venue, ceremony, reception” followed by the city where the wedding will take place. This method may help gather relevant venues specifically for that area. By participating in this critical step it can go a long way in helping reduce the stress for the Bride-to-Be.

Helping the Bride design her wedding invitation layout, may seem overwhelming due to the many layouts to chose from, but it is mainly important to go for a layout relevant to the weddings theme such as the wedding colors, or if it’s a Autumn themed wedding for example. Using Pintrest.com for wedding ideas has many do-it-yourself projects for wedding invitations and decorations which makes this part of the process a fun project for the Bride, MOH, and the bridesmaids to do together at the Bride’s home over a glass of wine and laughs after visiting the nearby craft store.

While going with the Bride to shop for her wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses, it is very important to help make sure the dresses that are ordered will arrive in time for alterations. A MOH must attend all dress fittings while giving the Bride some constructive feedback on how the dress looks and fits, but don’t forget that it is her wedding. As a MOH, you must direct the bridesmaid court through their duties and keep them all on the same page. These duties may consist of making sure everyone gets their bridesmaid dress on time and attend dress fittings, as well as finding the right jewelry for their wardrobe.

A MOH must host and plan the Bridal Shower as well as the Bachelorette Party with the bridesmaids and must attend both! Also, you must acknowledge the invited guests to these events, and share with them where exactly the Bride and Groom are registered for gifts. For the Bachelorette Party; whether it is a trip to Las Vegas, or a night out in the town, make sure it’s a night with lots of fun, games, and fun accessories. However this party is planned; just make sure it is with a ton of fun because after all, it’s her last hurrah as a single lady!

On the day of the wedding, it is the MOH’s job to make sure the Bride has everything she needs the day of the wedding, assist her with getting into her dress, fix her gown and veil before she walks down the aisle, and hold her bouquet when she meets with the Groom. Most importantly, make sure it’s a day for the Bride to remember!

An MOH is a lot of work, but it is so much fun and exciting seeing everything come together the day of the wedding. The best advice I would give to another Maid of Honor is to be open minded in the decisions the bride makes (after all it is her day). Gather and coordinate as much as you can think of and have those resources at the ready which can be a huge benefit to the wedding. Realize that some things may go wrong, but don’t dwell on it, but rather do your duty and be diligent to verify, and validate every order made. If things go awry, then get onto fixing it—and plow ahead through until your check list gets smaller and smaller! Most importantly, think about the bride first, spoil her rotten on her bachelorette party with love and plenty of laughs! Always keep tissues handy in the bridal room, and remember to help keep up with the Groom’s ring! Finally to help her get into her wedding dress and her shoes and most of all . . . remind her to breathe!

Enjoy the planning process, and stay engaged with every facet of it because it really does fly by.

He Proposed At Last!

Now… Where Do I Start With Planning A Wedding?

Royal Affairs Ballroom walk through our doors and into a space of luxury.

We help our clients produce life events one memory at a time.

Getting married is often regarded as one of the most stressful events of our lives, so how can you make planning your wedding a pleasure, rather than a chore? Once you have set the date, your first considerations are probably going to be the theme of the wedding, the venue and the budget.

Let’s begin with the venue. These days you can get married just about anywhere, so you’ll have no shortage of wedding venues. In Dallas, Texas, for example, you can get married at the Arboretum – more than sixty acres of truly stunning gardens set on White Rock Lake. And, there are even more exotic wedding venues in Dallas. Take the neo-gothic beauty of The Black Gold Ballroom of the award-winning Joule Hotel. Or the heavenly 200 year old Belo Mansion along with its more recent addition, the Pavilion.

In the Dallas area, wedding venues in Dallas include Royal Affairs Ballroom. Take your special event to new heights with Royal Affairs Ballroom that accommodates up to 300 guests. Dressed in warm, neutral tones and lighting to accentuate the expansive space of the ballroom, check out the amenities we have to offer. The ballroom’s décor includes prestigious columns and an impressive full size crystal chandeliers that overlooks the dance floor and adds an inviting ambiance to any wedding reception or special event. Let us show you how your 5-star wedding and reception can be planned in grand style with traditional elegance and contemporary flair. Call Us Today! and we’ll give you a personalized tour.

Wherever you choose to hold your wedding, be sure to give consideration to the number of people that will be attending. A small venue can get very claustrophobic with too many guests, but neither will you want a more humble guest list of half a dozen close family members getting lost amongst the rafters of a sprawling mansion the size of King Ranch!

Talking of numbers, now would also be a great time to get to grips with the finances. Of all the things you will do towards planning your wedding, this may well be the least romantic. But even if you have a fairly substantial budget available to you, you will still want to be in control of it rather than have to suffer any unpleasant surprises later on.

The way to do this is to get quotes for all the major services – limousine hire, DJ and/or band, flowers, catering, etc. – and decide a set amount for each one. You will need to strike a balance between being strict and being flexible. No-one wants to nickel and dime over their wedding, but unchecked wedding budgets have a sadly predictable habit of spiralling ever upwards. It is often a good idea to include a 10% contingency fund in your budget for just such an occurrence!

One example I can point to is my mother who, unbeknownst to me had been saving bridal magazines which helped me immensely. A lot of tasks you can do on your own, but you need to consider delegating those to your Maid of Honor (MOH)–read separate blog post. In summary, Bridal Shows can be helpful when finding vendors, DJ, venues, photographer etc. Magazines help when deciding on decor, themes and general ideas for how you want your wedding and reception to look and how you want your ambiance to feel. Also important, keep a binder or written record with ALL your information about ideas, vendors, receipts etc. Then you’ll have one centralized location to go to in case you need to reference an order or verify things. Communicating by Smart Phone is handy, but Email may be a better management idea since you can easily print pages, and/or store them for later reference.

Choosing a theme for your wedding is a very personal thing and usually the theme will be something personal to the bride and groom, even if it appears to make no real sense to anybody else! That said, there are several themes that have been seen on more than one occasion. Amongst my personal favorites have been Caribbean and Pirate themes, although one of the most gentle and romantic I have witnessed was a wedding themed upon the Japanese Lotus Blossom flower. Whilst your theme should be personal, a little originality can create a WOW factor.

So now you know where to start in order to make certain that your wedding is the perfect day it was always meant to be, yet still keep within your budget by balancing the practical with the romantic.

Congratulations on your engagement! Now it is time get to work and plan meticulously to ensure that your wedding turns out the perfect day you always hoped it would be. For additional information, search out our other Blog Posts entitled, “A New Bride-To-Be!”.
